PE SEMINARS - 2004
Module 2 -
Advanced Seminar
8 May 2004
Maxine Quinton
We had 9 attendees on the advanced seminar, namely:-
From the doggy world: Our dolphin & seal training friends:
Nadine
McInnes
Linda Clokie
Rory Shortland Lauren Marshall
Susan van Niekerk Michelle Kapp
June Fincham
Sue Heasley
Louise Thurlwell
On the Saturday the handlers had a refresher session on the method, and then
proceeded with the practical group sessions. Handlers teamed up into groups of
3, and were given an exercise to complete in 10 minutes.
The exercises were:
Arson
Detection
Fire Detection
Noise Detection
Handlers had a lot of fun doing these, and the dogs worked well. Each exercise was broken up into segments and trained as such.
The next practical session had dogs learning to skateboard. This proved a lot of fun, but the dog that stole the day was a 4 month old Boerbull puppy that really seemed to catch on! The last practical session had the dogs each doing a more difficult trick, the paw-over-the-eyes. The most successful was a maltese cross with Linda!

The Module 1 group during lectures
On the Sunday handlers got off to an early start. Maxine introduced the method to the beginners by using a 4 month old border collie. This puppy proved to be very responsive, and gave a lovely demonstration of the "sit". After a short video session and lecture, handlers proceeded to the field to try their new skills out on their dogs. Their task was to teach a simple new trick to their dogs. The tricks included begging, the roll-over, stand on hind legs, the twist and a few more. Later everyone was in for a treat - they played Maxine's training game, and some got to be the handler, while others got to be the "animal". This was a lot of fun, but was worth a great deal in understanding the confusion of the animal, as well as the inventiveness of the trainer. After more lectures and video clips, handlers were asked to go outside again and try 2 specific tasks. Firstly, they had to accustom the dogs to the target stick, and secondly they had to teach the "crawl". This, too, was very successful, and handlers showed off their new tricks individually at the end.

Some of the group during a practical
There was a bit of excitement in the clubhouse on the discovery of a snake during the lectures. It was later identified as a Boomslang, and we quickly had it removed! Here is a picture of the unhappy amphibian before it was set free..

After the seminars Maxine and two of the Module 2 dog handlers had an added extra by being invited to Bayworld to watch some medical testing on the dolphins. They witnessed the voluntary tubing of two dolphins for testing. These dolphins were accustomed to different types of tests, and proved very relaxed with all of the attention. Afterwards they enjoyed a great game and swam with their trainers.
Thanks to Maxine for an enjoyable weekend!
Thanks to Hills and Frontline for their partial sponsorship!
And thanks to PE Kennel Club for the hire of their premises.
